As a long-time advocate for the use of educational technology, I am still amazed at the speed that has become a necessity rather than a source of enrichment activities. Today’s learners, and even many parents, as they grow up with technology as part of their daily lives, keep their expectations and speculations about how technology is applied to learning. The classroom computer will no longer be locked in the corner for occasional special tasks and the video will no longer be used as a babysitter. Technology should be an integral part of classroom life.
What Students Need
If our mission, as educators, is to prepare students to become effective members of our society, then in addition to traditional knowledge and skills, students must now be prepared to access, evaluate, analyze, and integrate priceless amounts of knowledge. They need to have special listening skills, be able to use email, understand basic applications, use word processing and other applications, and use the Internet to do research.
This need creates new challenges for teachers, especially those who may not feel as ready to use technology as their students might. It is time for teachers to overcome the outdated notion that they must be experts in education technology before students are allowed to use it.
Parents and Students Portals
MySNHU is an online portal that allows students to access their academic records, grades, and other important information. My SNHU is specially designed for Southern New Hampshire University’s official students that allow students to access their records, schedule classes, and manage their academic information.
Another stunning portal in education is MyeClass. MyeClass is a web-based online portal designed for parents to check their children’s educational progress and share educational experiences on daily basis. With the MyeClass login page, parents can access grades and report cards, send messages to other parents, post photos and videos of their children, and more.
Many educational institutes have their own online portals. TTU Blackboard is the online web portal for the students of Texas Tech University to facilitate their students. Each student is awarded a unique Blackboard ttu account to check his course activities and grades.
Other Benefits of Educational Technology
o increase interest (even activities)
o provides a purpose for learning
o develops the idea that all information is related (not separate pieces)
o allows for learner diversity in learning styles
Educational Technology in the Science Class
The decision to use technology in the learning environment is usually not driven by technology but the work that is being done.
Take, for example, the case of a physics teacher who needed to set up certain thermodynamics labs but had no remaining money for materials or equipment. Because he was fortunate enough to have eight computers in his classroom, he was able to use them to build a lab. Students are sent to the science software used by the school and the website. The site has a good imitation of this teacher who feels co-operative and does a better job of showing the physics behind the topic than traditional labs.

Because scientific study requires extensive analysis, the use of educational technology in the science class is particularly appropriate. Learning to solve complex problems requires a different teaching method than learning the different skills and knowledge needed for standardized assessment purposes. For example, while conducting an online survey, a student needs to be able to explore an online resource for credibility, accuracy, and bias; the same kind of knowledge that is required in scientific experiments.
