For more than 100 years, the American Red Cross has been the leading first responder training organization in this country. Each year, more than 300,000 candidates are trained with the knowledge and skills to help prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies at swimming pools, water parks and unsortable beaches.
Currently, the shortage of lifeguards has caused the closure of some aquatic facilities or the reduction of the hours available for public use. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staffing shortages extend beyond the aquatics industry and increased competition for workers has made it difficult to recruit and retain staff at aquatic facilities.
GET TRAINED Are you interested in being a lifeguard?
Those over the age of 15 can enroll in (in English) courses taught by our aquatic training providers. Upon successful completion, participants receive a 2-year First Responder certification that includes First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Responder.

The offer includes:
- Lifeguard classes
- Lifeguard in shallow water (up to 1.5 meters of water)
- Water Attraction Lifeguard (3 feet of water or less)
- Optional add-ons for the water park and lifeguard service in front of the sea (areas not related to surfing).
The courses last about 25 hours. Options include instructor-led and blended offerings (online learning with in-person instructor-led skills sessions).

The Red Cross offers other rescue and lifesaving programs for people of different levels and ages.
- The Learn to Swim and Junior Lifeguard programs help prepare future lifeguards.
- The Lifeguard Program (Online Course) helps managers and supervisors build a strong team of lifeguards through recruitment, selection, training, and supervision.
